In early 2014, EMC launched Pivotal Big Data Suite, which unifies different data technologies and licenses them together. The suite, as the above presentation shows, includes:

  • Greenplum Database – Massively Parallel Processing (or MPP) relational data warehouse
  • Pivotal HD – EMC’s Hadoop distribution
  • HAWQ – SQL on Hadoop engine that integrates Greenplum technology into Pivotal HD

Pivotal announced layoffs

In 2014, EMC announced layoffs. In late November 2014, Pivotal, which launched in April 2013 with 1,250 people, announced layoffs of 60 executives. The company has around 1,800 employees. Layoffs were not large enough to trigger public notification under the WARN Act. 2014 saw many leading technology players announce layoffs as a way to reduce costs. In 2014, IBM (IBM) announced 15,000 job cuts and Microsoft (MSFT) announced 18,000 job cuts.

EMC intends to introduce new cloud and data fabrics technologies to build and deploy applications faster in the near future. The company expects these technologies to drive growth of Pivotal Labs and Pivotal Cloud Foundry.
