Pivotal recorded the highest growth among all the operating segments
As mentioned in the earlier part of the series, EMC’s (EMC) Pivotal recorded the highest growth with 24% growth in net revenues to $58 million during 3Q14. The division was formed in collaboration with and investments from EMC, VMware (VMW), and GE (GE). In 3Q14, Pivotal was EMC’s fastest-growing division.

Big Data Suite launched in early 2014
In early 2014, EMC launched Pivotal Big Data Suite, which unifies different data technologies and licenses them together. The suite, as the above presentation shows, includes:
- Greenplum Database – Massively Parallel Processing (or MPP) relational data warehouse
- Pivotal HD – EMC’s Hadoop distribution
- HAWQ – SQL on Hadoop engine that integrates Greenplum technology into Pivotal HD
- GemFire – Distributed in-memory transactional database
- GemFire XD – Hadoop-based in-memory database for Java workloads
- SQLFire – NewSQL database
Pivotal announced layoffs
In 2014, EMC announced layoffs. In late November 2014, Pivotal, which launched in April 2013 with 1,250 people, announced layoffs of 60 executives. The company has around 1,800 employees. Layoffs were not large enough to trigger public notification under the WARN Act. 2014 saw many leading technology players announce layoffs as a way to reduce costs. In 2014, IBM (IBM) announced 15,000 job cuts and Microsoft (MSFT) announced 18,000 job cuts.
EMC intends to introduce new cloud and data fabrics technologies to build and deploy applications faster in the near future. The company expects these technologies to drive growth of Pivotal Labs and Pivotal Cloud Foundry.
EMC estimates the total addressable market for Pivotal will be around $20 billion by 2017.
T-Mobile wants to showcase its strength before its first-quarter earnings release. T-Mobile is scheduled to report its first-quarter results on April 25.
Mondelēz (MDLZ) is scheduled to announce its first-quarter earnings results on April 30.
Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) is scheduled to release its first-quarter earnings on April 25.
Ford has risen 8.2% in April so far as compared to 2.6% gains in the S&P 500 Index.
On April 22, natural gas prices settled at $2.52 per MMBtu—1.4% above the lowest closing level for active natural gas futures since June 8, 2016.
Kimberly-Clark (KMB) stock rose 5.4% on April 22 after the company released stronger-than-expected first-quarter results.
